Symptoms of Low Morale

Use the following list to determine if your team has low morale.

 
There is a pronounced "them vs. us" tone when team members talk about higher management
 
Covert conversations take place among team members from which you are conspicuously excluded
 
You hear team members using phrases like: "What's the point?" or "Nobody cares"
 
Team members openly display resentment when asked to take on additional responsibility
 
Former high achievers are now handing in assignments that are minimally acceptable
 
Team members label management policies and decisions as unfair
 
Team members seem to give up quickly and try to delegate upwards to you
 
Team members take an inordinate amount of time to complete even simple tasks
 
Team members complain that higher management is setting conflicting priorities
 
You have to spend a great deal of time to make sure tasks are getting done
 
Team members rationalize sloppy work
 
Team members sit quietly in meetings with management, then become animated in post-meeting discussions among themselves
 
Team members complain that others are not carrying their share of the load
 
Informal leaders covertly oppose your authority
